Choosing Papers with Purpose

Why the paper beneath your design matters more than you might think.

When you begin planning your wedding stationery, there are countless details to consider. Wording, colours, typography, print finishes and embellishments all play their part—but there is one element that is often overlooked.

The paper.

Before your guests read a single word, they will feel the invitation in their hands. Its weight, texture, colour and finish create an impression before the design has even had a chance to speak.

For me, choosing paper is never simply a matter of selecting something that looks beautiful. It is about finding the stock that supports the design, complements the character of your celebration and creates the right experience when your invitation is first opened.

More than a colour choice

Paper can quietly influence the entire character of a stationery collection.

A warm ivory can feel soft and romantic. A crisp white can create a more contemporary, editorial aesthetic. A softly textured stock can introduce an organic, tactile quality, while a smooth, substantial card can feel beautifully refined.

The choice doesn't have to be obvious.

Sometimes the most luxurious paper is the one that simply makes everything else feel more considered.

The importance of texture

Luxury is often experienced through touch.

A beautiful cotton stock has a soft, tactile quality that makes an invitation feel substantial in the hand.

Textured or handmade papers can introduce subtle variations that give each piece an individual character, while vellum offers an entirely different experience through its translucent, delicate finish.

These details may seem small, but they contribute to how your stationery is remembered.

Your invitation is often the first physical piece of your wedding that your guests experience. The paper should therefore feel like a natural introduction to the celebration you are creating.

Weight matters too

The weight of a paper affects much more than how substantial an invitation feels.

It can influence the way a piece sits in an envelope, how it handles a particular printing process and how the individual elements of a suite work together.

A beautifully weighted invitation can feel immediately special when it is lifted from its envelope, while lighter stocks can be used thoughtfully for additional cards and information pieces without overwhelming the suite.

There isn't one "perfect" weight for every wedding.

The right choice depends on the design, printing method and overall feel we are creating together.

Paper and print should work together

Paper and printing are intrinsically connected.

A soft cotton stock can be particularly beautiful with traditional techniques such as letterpress, where the impression becomes part of the tactile experience. Foiling introduces a refined metallic detail, while digital printing allows for beautifully precise colour and intricate artwork across a wide range of papers.

The surface of the paper can influence how colour appears, how an illustration is reproduced and how a particular finish catches the light.

This is why I consider the materials and print method together rather than choosing them independently.

The goal isn't simply to add beautiful finishes.

It is to create harmony between every element.

The finishing touches

Sometimes it is the combination of materials that makes a collection feel truly distinctive.

A thick cotton invitation paired with a translucent vellum layer.

A softly coloured card finished with elegant typography.

A handmade paper envelope liner featuring an illustration of your wedding venue.

A silk ribbon bringing several pieces together.

Each material has its own character, and when carefully combined, they can create a stationery suite that feels layered, tactile and entirely personal.

Choosing with purpose

When we begin designing your stationery, I don't expect you to arrive knowing which paper, weight or finish is right for your wedding.

That's part of my role.

We'll consider your venue, colour palette, wedding style and the atmosphere you want your guests to experience. From there, I'll guide you through the materials and finishes that will work beautifully with your design.

Where appropriate, samples can also be used to experience the papers and materials in person before your collection moves into production.

Because ultimately, the right paper isn't necessarily the most expensive option, the thickest stock or the most heavily textured finish.

It is the one that feels right.

Right for your design.

Right for your celebration.

And right for the story you're beginning to tell.

Thoughtfully chosen. Beautifully considered.

Your wedding stationery should offer your guests a glimpse of what is to come.

From the moment an envelope arrives through their letterbox to the moment they hold your invitation in their hands, every detail can begin to set the tone for your celebration.

And sometimes, the smallest detail—the paper itself—is where that story begins.

Every invitation begins a story.
